Biography
Juan Declet-Barreto is a Geographer interested in understanding, mapping, analyzing, and finding solutions to the unequal human health and livelihoods impacts of environmental hazards, particularly those exacerbated by climate change. Juan holds degrees in Geography (B.S., M.A.), GIS (Associates), and a PhD in Environmental Social Sciences from Arizona State University. His interdisciplinary training in social theory, urban climatology, environmental justice, environmental history, sociology and GIS gave Juan the opportunity to put research into action as a Climate and Health Research Fellow with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) over the last two years. At NRDC, Juan contributed to link climate change to adverse health impacts, with a special attention on low-income communities of color, arguably the most vulnerable populations to climate change impacts. Juan is currently a Climate and Science Fellow with the Union of Concerned Scientists, where he is researching potential impacts of carbon markets and policies among environmental justice communities. Juan’s methodological toolkit is GIS-centric, integrating (geo)statistical and data visualization both with GIS platforms as well as open-source solutions that help augment the analytical and data processing capabilities of out-of-the-box GIS functionality.
